Sarah Cosgriff

Queer scientist | Asexual advocate (She/They)

Who am I

Sarah Cosgriff  is an award-winning science communicator, asexual advocate and public speaker. They have a degree in biological sciences and a background working in inclusive science education.

Growing up, Sarah had limited queer representation: they attended school during Section 28, a law which banned the so called ‘promotion of homosexuality’.

This experience drives their passion for making safe and inclusive spaces for queer youth, and to raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists. Sarah has done this through multiple projects such as producing education resources for teachers; presenting science shows featuring LGBTQ+ scientists and colourful science demonstrations; and founding the initiative ‘STEM for Queer Youth’, which involves LGBTQ+ scientists visiting a LGBTQ+ youth group. Sarah has also previously worked directly with schools to support them with their LGBTQ+ inclusion work.

Sarah came to realise they were asexual at aged 31. After coming out, they realised that there was a lack of visibility of asexual people working in or studying STEM subjects. From this Sarah co-founded Aces in STEM, an online network to help connect asexual people in STEM. They also started sharing their experiences with navigating their identity on social media and through engaging talks, some of which have included science demonstrations. Sarah also produced ‘Queer Cuz’ with their cousins, a podcast focused on queer Filipino experiences.

Sarah was shortlisted for the National Diversity Awards in 2022 for the Positive Role Model – LGBT category, in recognition of their work in equity, diversity and inclusion.
